Krampus and Yeti Oh My!

Krampus is a favorite of mine when it comes to mythical creatures and folklore. Krampus is the devil like creature and sidekick of St. Nicholas. Known in many European regions such as Austria and Bavaria he makes his appearance with St. Nicholas during the first 2 weeks of December. He even has his own day which is December 5th. Krampus punishes the bad children by spanking or carring them away in his basket. Yeti is the cousin of Bigfoot. He is found in the Himalayan regions. He also makes an appearance in the Rudolph movie.

Well we have had snow a couple times. I hasn't stuck but it does help to get me in the Holiday mode. I think I will take a short break from snowmen. I think some mushrooms and elves are in order. The Haunting part 3

Another young man bought the house. He began to remodel. He tore down walls and added a deck. Things were going well for him for a while. Then he lost his job. The house was foreclosed. It stood empty for two years. After that time it sold. The fate of the current owners is unknown.
What became of the family well, they have had struggles but they remain together. They told me there is no amount of money in the world that could take away the horror and pain they suffered in that house. It changed who they were. They wouldn't wish this upon anyone.
Their love for each other is what made it possible to go on. They have chased all the ghosts away. Where the road will take them now is unknown.

The Haunting part two

Slowly and over time the young man was turning mean. He was once kind, generous and loving. He was saying mean things to his love. The energy of the evil male spirit was affecting him greatly. He was becoming that which he hated.
She left. She had too. Not because of her love she knew he was inside there somewhere. She left because of the spirits and the harm they were causing to them both. She could not take it anymore.
She worried everyday that she was gone. She thought something horrible could happen. Something that could not be undone.
She became aware that there was a 3rd spirit involved another female. The mean male and the sobbing female were creating a nightmare. A never ending cycle a loop and horrible haunt. The couple was caught up in this that had nothing to do with them.
She had to get out or she too would go mad.
She stayed away for sometime. The young man called her and wanted her to come home. He promised he would do whatever it took to rid the house. She was torn. She loved the young man and he needed her. She returned.
Two years went by and the haunting persisted on and off. Then the couple found out they were going to have a baby. They were happy and looking forward to welcoming their child. They were hopeful for a fresh start and new life.
They knew they had to get out of that house. This was important for their health and well being. They did not want their baby exposed to this nightmare.
They put the house up for sale. The house did not sell. This was a stressful time. They had many things working against them.
It took the family 4 long years to finally sell the house. The young family could now move on from the nightmare and start fresh. They were expecting their 2nd child. They moved on and moved away.

The Haunting part one

This haunting happened and is true. I do not use names. Those involved know who they are and know what happened.
It all began in the late 1990's. A young man purchased a home from his parents. Little did he know what came with the house and the burden it would cause him.
He moved in and was busy working on clearing out the house. The house needed work paint carpet and overall updating. The basement was a mess. He needed that space to run his business out of. Dealing with the house and all it's issues was time consuming.
When he was settled in and things for him were going well. He was successful. He was handsome, dating and had many friends.
After a few months the haunting began. Two spirits invaded his life and home. One was a mean and malevolent spirit. This one was a male energy. It came with bad energy and pain. It used the weaker female energy. There was sorrow and great sadness associated with her spirit.
The young man thought he was going crazy. The presence of these two spirits were affecting his entire life. Despite the paint and fresh carpet the home was heavy. The young man's heart was heavy too.
He began to understand that buying the house was a huge mistake. Financially and emotionally he was trapped in a nightmare.
He tried to claim the house as his own. After all he bought it it was his. For a short time it worked the spirits left. But they would always return.
The trauma of all of this was taking a toll on the the young man. Every time the spirits would leave things in the house would go missing and the sanity of the young man also. He had to scream and demand that the two spirits leave. He wanted more than anything his life and home back.
His life went on and he tried to push out all thoughts about the unwanted spirits. His girlfriend moved in. He was looking forward to starting a new life and family with her. They were very happy together. The were looking forward to a bright future.
The happiness faded quickly when the spirits returned. Sadly for the young couple this went on and on. Sometimes for 4 months and sometimes for 6 or 8 months.
It was horrible and the haunting changed the young man. He became withdrawn. His business suffered greatly. His girlfriend hated to see him suffer this way. He did not deserve this. His personality changed.
He was once a confident and happy person. Now there was darkness.
They both confronted the spirits. They told them to get out.
The male spirit would throw things. Salt and pepper shakers would go flying. Hands would slam on the dinning room table. Yelling and doors slamming. The female spirit would sob and moan. They often heard her whisper "why, why".
It got so bad the young lady could not take it anymore. The mean male energy would bother her when she was alone. She was uncomfortable in her own home. He was very creepy. She could feel his presence and smell his horrible breath. Not only was he scary but he came with the smell of cheap cologne. The minute she smelled it she would want to flee her home.

She loved the young man but his personality was changing so much. He was sad and withdrawn and unable at times to think clearly.

I know what you're thinking! She an her magic mushrooms what an odd person. I can't help it! My obsession with fungi goes to far. There is a good reason for including mushrooms in Halloween decor really! According to folklore Witches used magic mushrooms to aid in their Halloween flights. I thought that was fun info.

Pumpkins a Goblin & a Snowman Clown

I finally was able to finish some pumpkins. I started these last year. Two down and only 9 or 10 to go. The Goblin and the Snowman Clown I just wanted to share. I'm working on lots more! I missed a Harvest show last year it was rained out so I'm hoping to do it this year. It's at our local Cider Mill. They have a lot more than cider & donuts. They make the best fruit wines too!

Vintage Inspired Pumpkin Head

I made this guy and he looks great the top of my spooky tree. Yes Halloween is slowly taking over my house. I made him with a paper disk covered in paper made and then paper clay. Then secured him to an old ribbon container. The festoon garland was a perfect fit where the ribbon once was. The back has spooky sayings on aged paper. He was somewhat vintage inspired. I have another one to finish maybe he will be a white pumpkin.
I am still having some online issues but I check in as often as I can. Wishing all a wonderful rest of the week!

Now that August is upon us I start looking for inspiration and really getting into the spirit of Halloween. A wonderful place to look and window shop for vintage Halloween is ebay. Anytime of year you can find the most amazing stuff. These next couple months is when a lot of people start listing. You could buy back all your childhood memories if you wish. Napkins and crepe paper with vintage graphics are really popular right now. The ones above are a wonderful example and they would be amazing framed. The spooky tree is my favorite!

A Welcome Visitor

Spiders some are stalkers some are web weavers. According to folklore they are a symbol of the cosmic order. Depending on what time of day they visit it could be good or bad luck. Don't kill one inside your home it will rain. This tale I grew up hearing and it is best to let them out!
This fellow is a crab spider and he's a stalker waiting for his prey. He looks just like a crab and he'd fit right in at the sea shore. This one is brown but I have seen crab spiders that are white and yellow too.

JUmping hoops

hi and happy summer! Life keeps throwing me big hoops, pots and pans and lots of other things my way to jump threw and duck. I am still without my computer. I am trying to make it possible to get a new or used one. Both my etsy shops are open and I have lots of treats and goodies to list. I would love to share some of my lastest creeplings with you. I have a vampire, witch, turnip, pumpkin and a snowman. Some of them are grumpy and sad. As much as I am a positive person being without a good way to get online makes me crazy. So maybe when I dodge a few more things I will be back and smiling. If I could just understand how to post pics to my blog using this phone I would be all set. I will try and check in soon. Until then I will be making grumpy creeplings and ducking and jumping.

Do you have it Fear of Clowns?
Well, I have to admit Pennywise the Clown from Stephen Kings It got to me a little. The other clown was the one in Poltergeist which turned it's head around that was creepy.
I used to watch Bozo as a child he didn't scare me.
Here's my nod the the Creepy Clown world. I think his name is Corky. My boys don't like him so I guess my attempt worked.

Glow in the Dark Halloween Graphics

I found this glow in the dark sticker sheet stuck to an old Dynamite Magazine. I tried to rescue the sheet by steaming it off. That didn't work so I thought I'd leave well enough alone. The copyright is 1977 Scholastic. I love the graphics and the combination of orange and aqua. They still glow in the dark when charged. I'm a fan of all that glows in the dark. I'm considering adding some glow to a ghost I'm working on. I also have some candy corn, cats and one creepy clown in the works.

What to do with a Harvest of clothes pins

If you're like me many things inspire you to be creative. Recently I was doing some basement exploring looking for inspiration. I came across a harvest of vintage wooden clothes pins. These clothes pins were my Nana's(Grandma's) and Busha's(Great Grandma's) they were used and really show their wonderful age. I don't hang many clothes and when I do I don't use clothes pins. After all we have dryers now. So this got me thinking what could I make with these clothes pins. I remember I once had a clothes pin doll. I'm not sure where she is now, I suppose she's hiding out in the basement.
So that brings me to a childhood memory of funny faced fruit refrigerator magnets. Do you remember these I'm not sure if they were from the 50's or earlier. I just remember loving them and their quirkiness. I remember a pear and a watermelon and apple guy. I'm not sure where they are perhaps they are playing with the clothes pin doll.
I decided I would take that inspiration & make some ornaments. So I've made a few batches of Halloween and Harvest Creepling Ornies. Most of the Halloween ones have sold which I'm thrilled about! I know it's only Spring but I'm having fun with Fall right now. Where do you get your inspiration from?

Windflower & lore

This little beauty is Anemone Blanda or Grecian Windflower. A common wildflower in the Mediterranean regions they do dance in the wind. These beauties don't last for long and were once a symbol of death. According to Greek Myth Aphrodite transformed Adonis into a purple anemone after his death. She loved him so much she wanted him to live on. In Christian myths they symbolize blood spilled by the saints.
Such a pretty little flower with such fascinating lore.

Morel the Mushroom Creepling

If you can't tell already I like Mushrooms. This is Morel he is up to no good! Morels are a real harbinger of spring here. I don't normally see them around our parts until May. This guy is arrived a little early.
Real Morels are a delicacy. There is a wonderful website if you'd like to learn more about them. There are even Festivals celebrating this fungi.
Mushrooms are a symbol of luck & prosperity and long life.

I'm so happy that Spring has arrived! It was such a very long winter. I'd like to introduce the last of my Spring ornaments. Disguised Bunny Carrot thinks he can fool the real Easter Bunny! His goal is not to get eaten. Bunnies and Easter Egg sugar cookies ornaments are super happy & springy.

Valentine's Day wasn't Hallmark's creation

February 14th romance and Valentine's Day date back further than you may think. The Roman celebration Lupercalia was celebrated on February 15. This celebration was the unofficial beginning of Spring. The Roman God Faunus representing fertility was honored.
Later this celebration became associated with Christan and Catholic customs. According to some folklore, Emperor Claudius II also known as Claudius the cruel banned all marriages for soldiers. Unwed soldiers fought better in his opinion. A Priest Valentine secretly wed the soldiers. He was thrown in jail. He wrote a note to his beloved " Farewell from your Valentine". He later became St. Valentine and Christian customs absorbed the Pagan ones.

Well hello I'm back. Nasty bug going around. So I'm working on Bunnies. Who says they have to be brown or white? Why not fun, funky and bright! No I haven't forgot about Valentines and Shamrocks. It's just that the bunnies are calling so I started a few. After all 2011 is the year of the Rabbit. The Rabbit according to the Chinese zodiac symbolizes: Creativity, Compassion and Sensitivity. So back to work for me. I'm off to roll up some bunny noses and such. Happy 2011!

What do Magic Mushrooms have to do with "Happy New Year"? I found some fun and fascinating folklore!
The Autumnal Magic Mushroom or Amantia Muscaria has long be associated with elves, gnomes and fairy tales. Just look inside a children's book they pop up everywhere. It's history as a hallucinogen dates back 10,000 years. Often used by Shaman and mixed with other ingredients to ward off potentially deadly side effects. Magic Mushrooms are associated with Midwinter, Christmas and New Years. Folklore says Santa used these Mushrooms to aid in the flight of his reindeer. Santa an elf himself is dressed in the same colors as the Magic Mushroom.
The Vintage postcards above are just amazing! They are French "Bonne Annee" meaning Happy New Year. "Prosit Neujahr" which is a German toast to the New Year! Slovakia "Stastlivy Novuy Rok" Happy New Year. I love the last one which is the money bag holding the Magic mushroom umbrella.
So on that thought I'd love to end by saying "Happy New Year"!

Krampus A Devilish Sidekick

Krampus is the Holiday Devil that traditionally accompanies St. Nicholas during the first 2 weeks of December. The eve of December 5th known as Krampusnacht on this night St. Nicholas brings gifts to the good. The bad however aren't so lucky! Right alongside St. Nicholas is Krampus. He is the punisher of the bad! Have you been naughty this year? Do you deserve a spanking or perhaps you need to be carried off entirely! Krampus gives a whole new meaning to You'd better Watch Out, You'd better not cry! I'm telling you why Krampus Claws is coming to town! The word Krampus is Old German for Claw(Krampen).
The versions above are from old postcards. As you can see there are many different types of Krampus. My Sugar Cookie version is a tamer version but don't let him fool you! He carries a Birch branch for spanking!

Spooky Tree # 2

Here's Spooky Tree #2! The Witch Hag is front and center a wicked original by Sheila of Primdolly. She also makes other creatures of the Night! The little Green Goblin was created by Theresa of Sycamore Moon Studio. His hat is a real acorn cap and his body is spun cotton he's got a lot going on for a little fellow. I love him because he is a cutie but also because he is so original! I'd love a tree full of these Green Goblins! Who wouldn't oh and she also makes some wonderful root people too. The little Jol is from Shell Hawk and he's next to William Bezek's wonderful Acorn! There is also a Skeleton ornament from William. The wonderful Pumpkin on the base is yes none other than a Gourdqueen original! I love Linda's work she rocks the Halloween world off it's gourd. The Skelly Doll I adore and Nina from Gothic Southern Belle Art created her. More Tags from Retro Rudolph's and the pear and cat ornies are Greg Guedel. The other glass ornaments I got years ago at Joann Fabrics. Now some of these I was lucky enough to win in giveaways so never hesitate to enter because you could win some wonderful and amazing Treats!
Now I'm off to tie down the house before the Wicked Winds whip though here today! I hope we all don't blow away!

My Spooky Tree filled with Goodies & not just from me

I also love to collect other artists Halloween and Christmas when I can. So here's one of my Spooky Trees decorated with just a few of my favorites. Lisa Nelson of Bucks County Designs Black Cat and Jol Ornament is front and center. She's wonderful and I love her vibrant spooky creations! Lori Rudolph of Retro Rudolph's vintage style lantern's and tags grace this tree. I love vintage style Halloween goodies and no one does that better than Lori! Greg Gudel is amazing I love his original Halloween woodcarvings. I can't afford those at the moment. I was able to snag these paper mache ornaments which are reproduced by Bethany Lowe. The glass owl and jack ornament is by Old World Christmas. The little Jol with the hat is vintage plastic and I found him on ebay. The other dodas are mine. So that's just one tree I'll post the other tomorrow! Now I'm off to put Halloween bags together for kid parties. Wishing you all a day filled with Spooky Goodness!

It's that time again! We got our first frost last night and now I can use our fake fireplace to dry my ornaments. I've got a fresh batch of pine cones drying. They will become snowmen, elves, mushroom men and a few Santa's. I also have a batch of sugar cookie type ornaments : reindeer, krampus, naughty stocking, elves, Santa, yeti. So back to painting and maching for me.

I really don't think there could be a better setting for a Haunted Trail than a beautiful Lake. There was a Witch and a Vampire and Spider Man. Many Ghosts and Ghouls came out for the occasion. The scene was set for Spooky Fun. Then Darkness fell and the Haunted Trail was open. Tricks and Treats for everyone!

I just finished Oliver. I don't have him listed anywhere yet he is going on a road trip down to North Carolina. He may not come back but if he does I'll let you know where he'll be.
Owls I love them don't you! They have been associated with mystery and magic since ancient times. A nocturnal bird of prey who's eerie screech could be mistaken for a scream! No wonder they fit perfectly into Autumnal and Halloween decor. Owls often known as a Witches Familiar. It was also thought that a Witch could shape shift into an Owl. Hecate the Witch Goddess and Athena the Goddess of Wisdom both had Owls as their familiars. During dusk known as witching time the death of the day is called Owl Light. During this time a Witch can be transported into the other world. I just thought this was fun info!

I'm just diverting away form Halloween for a moment to share my newest ornament. I am always fascinated to discover why we use certain symbols for decorating through the holidays. The folklore of Holly and Berries is wonderful. A symbol of rebirth used for protection against: naughty faeries, bad weather and lightning. It is considered very good luck to bring Holly & Berries into your home for the Holidays. If you choose the thorny type which is consider male or the smooth type considered female this determines who will rule the home in the coming year husband or wife. Ghastly Goodies at Ghoultide Gathering

Saturday I attend the 4th annual Ghoultide Gathering Artists Spectacular in Northville Michigan! Many of my favorite Halloween Artists were showing off their wicked wonderful creations! The Jack O' Lantern Scarecrows and Skeleton Man pictured above are creations of Scott Smith of Rucus Studio. His work is pure Halloween Magic! I tried to take a close-up of me and one of his Jack's. I'm a little soggy from the rain which did not damper the Halloween Festivities! I was really thrilled to get to meet several Artists. I had a long Halloween wish list I would have loved to get a treat from each and everyone. That didn't happen but I was able to pick up a couple of goodies from two of my favorites. A wonderful Witch Hag ornament from Sheila Bentley of Primdolly Designs. Her Witches are beyond Wicked! I also had to have one of William Bezek's acorns! William's work is amazing and to die for! It was great meeting both of you! I've already got another wish list for next year. Halloween Dreaming!

October's Calling Time to Decorate

Growing up one of the first things we'd do is pull out the Halloween die-cuts and stick them all over the windows. With tape! I don't do that anymore but I do use window clings and I do hang Halloween die-cuts around. The Beistle Company still makes wonderful Halloween Party decorations. The book pictured above is a wonderful resource for you Vintage Halloween Collectors. The imagery from that era is breathtaking. Check Amazon to find a copy of Timeless Halloween Collectibles 1920-1949 by Claire M. Lavin. I have this book and it's really wonderful.

Vampire's I Love

Don't you just love Vampires! My first encounter with them was as a very young child. Sesame Streets Count Von Count and his counting obsession thrilled me as a kid. I loved his maniacal laugh and that he could "poof" turn into a bat!
Here's my version of a quirky Vampire. Thank You so Much he is SOLD!
Sir Graves Ghastly was the other Vampire we allowed into our house growing up. My mom an avid Scary Movie fan would draw the curtains and we'd watch Sir Graves. He would come on before the actual movie. Does anyone remember him? Watch the You Tube clip if you'd like a blast from the past. Silly yes scary no! He dressed in drag a alot. The opening is the part I remember and loved.

Halloween Treats and Christmas galore will be at this show so if you can go! I wish I could! These Treats came in the mail today and I was Screaming with Halloween delight!
