The Guts of it all

Aren't they just lovely! I love everything about carving pumpkins including the guts! This year I helped my boys carve two. My oldest he carved his own. We roast some seeds and save some for planting next year. I used to hide poems and pumpkin seeds in my folk art. I should again I haven't in a while! Now I'm off to do some roasting. Wishing you all a spooky Sunday! And to those of you in the perfect storm be safe friends!

Halloween Honeycombs

I remember we had these! Late 70's early 80's.
Cool Spider 60's or 70's

Hi Halloween friends! Are you all ready for Halloween?  I just wanted to share these wonderful vintage Halloween honeycombs with you. I still have some pumpkins like these but they have been taped and aren't in great shape. I really wish I still had that fist set pictured above! Love the Witch and Skeleton!

You know what ... starting Christmas designs is scary

I just finished this snowball fighting Winter Sycamore Tree! I know it's not Halloween yet but I need to start think about snow and elves at this time. I thought I'd share him with you all. If you'd like a closer look he's in my etsy shop. Happy Monday!

A Bumper Crop

Type: Howden's Field
Types: Blue Australian/Jarrahdale and Butternut
Type: Scallop/Patty Pans
Types: Orange Mammoth and White Lumina
We had a wonderful time at the Pumpkin Farm! Each of my sons picked their own pumpkin. Although Michigan had a bad drought this year one crop loved it! We asked the farmer and he said they watered directly from their river and it shows! After we got our pumpkins we went to our favorite family run Cider and Donut place. They didn't have  a lot of apples or cider this year. It was not a good year for apples. It was a fine year for yummy donuts though. I guess it's always a good year for those!

Let's Make Some Noise

A Spooky Witch Clicker
Amazing graphics

Blow your horn!

Shake it up!
A Ratchet

Another Clicker
A Banger and Owl Click

Most of these amazing tin litho noisemakers are from the 1950's. Many are made my US Metal and were made in the USA. I think it would be great if these were once again manufactured. I think the clicker style would be perfect for the tricker treaters!

Just Batty

An amazing vintage postcard with a bat and candle magic.

A spooky front porch from Martha Stewart.

Another wonderful Halloween postcard.
A very cool Dennison die-cut 1920's.
Gone Batty Folklore
~ Bats in many cultures symbolized death
~ As nocturnal creatures they roost in underground caves, old barns and spooky places
~ Known as Witches familiars
~ Bats are Witches in disguise
~ Sacred to Goddess Freya
~ They are a symbol of good luck
~ A symbol of rebirth
~ Vampire bats which I will discuss when I do a post on Vampires

Freaky Friday

Creepy, Creepy yikes!  I just thought I'd share these with you I never really liked basements. The older the home the scarier they are. My friend had one with a dirt floor and it was were they had to do laundry. It was always spooky!
The make-up job is amazing and yet very disturbing!

Oh You Devil

The Devil is one of the rarest and sort after character in Halloween Decor. Why well I guess it is because this fellow is considered evil and bad. Why would you invite him into your home. I was actually asked by a family member not to make them. Well mine are not very scary or evil I was surprised by the request. I guess fear of the Devil can run deep. So on that note here is some devilish folklore I found.
~ Bonfires on All Hallows Eve were to honor the changing seasons the church decided instead they were fine and their purpose was to keep the Devil at bay
~ Devil's Night is October 30th growing up this meant cars were soaped and egged and trees were toilet papered
~ Do not peek in church windows on Halloween or you will see the Devil
~ Do not look into a mirror by candlelight on Halloween or the Devil will appear
~ Do burn a real candle in you Jack O' Lanterns on Halloween Night it will keep the Devil away
I did try and find some vintage Devils on ebay and etsy and there wasn't really that much. I do think if you collect them now is the best time to try and find some.

Halloween Branding

I love when companies actually have limited addition treats for Halloween. These Oreo cookies are a favorite at our house. There are pumpkins, black cats, ghosts, bats and witch designs. Someone ate them all! Now I would love to keep the packaging but really I do not want to end up on Hoarders!
Now I admit I only bought this pizza because it had a spider on it! I knew it did not have spider shaped pepperoni, but don't you think it should!

Halloween and Fairies

Halloween has a long history with all magical being in the fairy realm.
Here's what I found on my hunt for folklore concerning Fae.
~ Fairies emerge on Hallowe'en when the veil between our world and theirs opens
~ It is best to leave them an offering so they do not cause you any mischief
~Iron is said to keep them at bay
~It is best to use a horseshoe which is sacred to the Moon Goddess and shaped in a crescent
~There are thousands of different types of Fae from goblins, fairies, brownies, pixies and so on
~On Hallowe'en Fae disguises themselves in the form of cats known as pooka.
~A Halloween full moon is known as a fairies lamp.
~Avoid Hawthorn trees on Halloween they are the portholes of Fae.

A little Fairy Rhyme

Hallowe'en will come, will come
Witchcraft will be set agoing,
Fairies will be at full speed,
Running in every pass,
Avoid the road, children, children.
